Jim Curtis makes appearance on Money Matters Radio (WBNW 1120 AM)
May 10, 2010
ANDOVER, MA – When WBNW 1120 AM, Money Matters Radio Network wanted to raise awareness among its listeners of the Massachusetts Brownfields Tax Credit program, they knew they needed an expert to present the key facts and advantages to the audience in a easy to understand manner.
On the May 7, 2010 Money Matters Afternoon Edition with host Scottie McCall, Jim Curtis of Cooperstown Environmental LLC, an acknowledged expert on all aspects of Brownfields Tax Credits, provided an overview of the program, discussed how to qualify for this valuable tax incentive, and how the ability to sell the tax credits for cash opens up opportunities for individuals and small businesses to benefit from this program even if they do not qualify for credits themselves.
Noting that, “A tax credit can be almost 20 times as valuable as a tax deduction”, Jim noted that there are two segments of taxpayers for whom the program is particularly attractive. In the first group are those who have spent money to clean up contamination that they did not cause. These people may be eligible to apply for Massachusetts tax credits of up to 50% of the amount they spent. The other segment includes anyone who desires to reduce their tax burden, from individuals, to small businesses, to large corporations. Since 2006, the State has allowed these Brownfields tax credits to be bought and sold, enabling recipients of credits to convert them to cash by selling them to entities with larger tax appetites. This also allows not-for-profit organizations to benefit from the program if they complete an environmental cleanup.
Host Scottie McCall, previously unaware of the program’s existence, observed that this is an interesting financial opportunity. He encouraged anyone with interest in this program to first talk with an expert. Particularly in light of the soft economy over the past 18 months, the Brownfields Tax Credit program offers potentially substantial rewards to any Massachusetts individual, business or other organization that completed environmental remediation activities.
