Will remove underground storage tanks and remediate site of HUD development
October 1,2009
ANDOVER, MA - Cooperstown Environmental LLC recently announced that it has been chosen in a qualifications-based selection process from among five respondents by the Boston Housing Authority (BHA). The work, which is being funded through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), will provide services at BHA's Commonwealth Housing Development on Fidelis Way in Brighton, home to over 1000 tenants.
Specifically, the ARRA funding will allow Commonwealth to upgrade the 11 buildings at the 1950s-era development to utilize natural gas for heat and hot water rather than the original oil-based boilers. Following the upgrade to gas, the existing underground storage tanks (USTs), which have been in service since the facility was constructed, will be removed and any required site remediation services will be implemented as required.
Cooperstown Environmental will work with the authority to document existing conditions, design the removal process, oversee the public bidding process including producing engineering plans and specifications, provide contract administration during the work, and serve as Licensed Site Professional (LSP) should any site contamination be encountered.
According to Cooperstown Environmental Executive Vice President Jim Curtis, "We expect that this project, which involves major construction at a public-housing facility that will continue to be occupied throughout the project, will present many challenges to the engineer, the selected Contractor, and the BHA and the tenants. I believe our selection for this important project is based in part on our experience with other, similar projects where we were able to navigate these challenges successfully."
Andover-based Huntress Associates will provide landscape architecture services during the restoration stage following removal of the USTs.
